if the republicans want to put anyone in charge of anything who is not a white man or darrell issa. choose from among these gals, john boehner and good luck. the powerball jackpot has two winners and that's not all. hillary clin puts her foot down about the susan rice controversy and the world's most famous christmas tree comes to looif. there were two winning powerball tickets and they were sold in last night's drawing in an astonishing jackpot of $580. somebody woke up happy this morning, two of them actually. the tickets had all six out of six numbers.

they were sold in arizona and missouri. so let's get right to the winning numbers. 5, 16, 22, 23, 29, and the powerball is 6. there were 68 tickets nationwide that had five numbers right. they'll each get $1 million. not bad. so tickets sold at a rate of 130,000 a minute. nearly nine million people won smaller prizes. now the search is on for the two big ticket holders whose lives are about to change forever. but for the rest of us, it is another day facing the fiscal cliff. negotiators are going to talk about specific proposaals for both sides to avoid that fiscal cliff. tracy pots joins us from washington with all the details. good morning to you. >> good morning, everyone. a number of high level but individual meetings scheduled here today on capitol hill with really just a handful of lawmakers who could have a big impact on your paycheck.

suggesting that while negotiations continue, congress should stop tax rates going up on the middle class now. >> we're not going to raise taxes on those people. i think we should make that clear to everybody. >> reporter: bottom line, no deal yet. both sides are still talking. and both sides signalling that they're willing to give some ground to get this done and get it done on time. lynn. >> thanks so much. it's not how he wanted to get there but former governor mitt romney heads to the white house. president obama is hosting his campaign rival at a private lunch. no reporters will be allowed in. it is the seventh time the two men have met face-to-face. it's going to be the first time since the election. there are no details on the meeting. in his victory speech, president obama said he hoped to speak with romney about how to move the country forward. despite another rough day of meetings with republican senators, u.n. ambassador susan rice received a new vote of confidence. this time from the president and secretary of state hillary clinton. the president called rice

extraordinary during a cabinet meeting she attended. clinton led a round of applause for rice who is considered to be a front-runner to be nominated as clinton's successor. a point later touched on during a news conference. >> susan rice has done a great job as our ambassador to the united nations and, of course, this decision about my successor is up to the president. i'm very happy he has the opportunity with a second term to make a decision. >> but on capitol hill, tennessee republican senator bob corker spoke with rice wednesday and later warned the president that the job of secretary of state is held to a higher standard than that of other appointees. last night on "hard ball," susan collins talked about her meeting with ambassador rice. she says why she is troubled about rice's comments on the attack on the u.s. mission in

front row seats there. >> it's amazing. it wasn't turned on earlier this morning when we came in. now it's in the full glory. do you get a better backdrop than this? it's absolutely gorgeous. even for the early morning people walking by and viewing the tree, it's not that cold out here. but it isn't windy either. so you're not seeing the lights rattle on the branches of the tree this morning. that could change though as we go into the next couple of days. we're dealing with really nice weather across the eastern half of the country. the only trouble spots really back across the west coast. storm after storm is going to pound california, oregon, and washington state. closer to home, albany is seeing snow right now. it's lake-effect snow coming off lake ontario stretching all the way into the birkshires of massachusetts. so we are seeing some snowfall across the northeast. it is just like a fact of nature. elsewhere, we're going to see that rain out towards california continue to move on shore. we saw a lot of airport delays

yesterday. also some mountain snow is likely. as far as rainfall totals, we are actually going to see in the next 48 hours perhaps more than five or six inches of rain, especially across northern california into southwestern oregon. seattle could pick up a couple inches of that rain as well. again, we're looking at another storm to make its way on west coast later on this afternoon. that one should be stronger than the storm we saw yesterday. here in the northeast with the gorgeous view behind me, things are looking fantastic near downtown looking at the christmas tree. lynn? >> thanks so much. >> dianne feinstein says close gitmo and move the prisoners to the u.s. plus, a tornado in tuscany. all this as well as the earth's oceans rising 60% faster than predicted. details are next. you're watching "first look." dog which looked real. let's go to wall street where markets did see a boost. the dow opens at 12,985. that is after rising 106 points yesterday. the s&p 500 added 10. the nasdaq gained 23. in tokyo, neat okay was up 92 points and the hang seng gained 14. chain stores release november retail sales figures todayment a new survey shows most adults would postpone holiday shopping until january if they could save money. and a different survey found that holiday parties are making a comeback with 83% of companies hosting an event this season. researchers have tested the foam in 100 couches and 40% contained banned toxic chemicals that can cause cancer. a recall has been ordered of a trampoline for safety reasons. it involves sports power park side model trampolines sold at sports authority stores between

april 2007 and may 2012. the philadelphia water department has been a target of a multimillion dollar scam after an employee allegedly ordered excess ink and toner and then sold it to a printer supply company which paid him $545,000. living social is going to lay off 400 u.s. workers following the big loss in the third quarter. in minnesota, the "star tribune" reports that 400 workers will be the owners of three grocery stores this as he gives back to his loyal employees instead of selling the business. there's some good news there. and marissa meyer, the 37-year-old ceo of yahoo says her priorities are god, family, and yahoo in that order. stupid criminals caught on tape, trust me, you're going to want to see this one. plus, rock memorabilia including john lennon's last autograph and the famous gold wire rimmed glasses.

i want to thank you for the gloves. i came to work today and didn't have gloves and you just kind of saved my hands here this morning. but we have got a front row ticket here at the rockefeller christmas tree. it is absolutely stunning. it's gorgeous. and without the wind, you know, the lights and trees aren't bouncing around. it is such a peaceful sight this morning. it's absolutely gorgeous. what a way to kick off this holiday season. weatherwise in new york city, anyone coming down to see the tree i'm sure things get much busier this time of year. it is looking like a fantastic day. a little chilly each morning. we're starting off in the 30s. the cold, cold air is in the dakotas and northern minnesota. we're going to see temperatures today warm into the mid 40s in the northeast. we have 60s in the southeast. the trouble spot today and tomorrow and even over the next 72 hours will be back across the west coast where we'll see perhaps more than a foot of rainfall in northern california. but for friday, the eastern half of the country still enjoying really nice weather.
